MSC Elsa 3 Ship Accident : On May 24, 2025, the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC Elsa 3 capsized approximately 38 nautical miles off the Kerala coast due to a technical failure in its ballast management system, shortly after departing from Vizhinjam port. Achievements of Tamil Nadu Government in Manufacturing Sector:
Achievement in Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP):
When the 'Make in India' program was launched in 2014, it set a target of increasing the manufacturing sector's share in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 25% by 2025. However, only 16% has been achieved so far. But Tamil Nadu alone has achieved 25% of its Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) from the manufacturing sector and stands as a state that guides the entire country.
World-Class Manufacturing Hub
Tamil Nadu houses factories of global major companies like Foxconn, Pegatron, Samsung, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, TVS Motor Company, and Ashok Leyland.
In companies manufacturing world-renowned Apple phones, over 50,000 employees produce millions of iPhones. Similarly, Feng Tay company, which is the primary company in manufacturing and supplying products for Nike company, operates several factories with 37,000 employees. Tamil Nadu has a total of over 31,000 operational factories, which is the highest number in India.
Tamil Nadu Leading in Exports in India:
Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leading state in India in manufacturing and exporting garments, automobile production, engineering goods, and electronic devices.
Although Tamil Nadu's population is less than 6% of India's total population, Tamil Nadu holds a 15% share in non-oil exports.
41% of India's electronic device products, 38% of footwear, and 45% of vehicles and automotive spare parts are exported from Tamil Nadu. Due to the excellent growth of Tamil Nadu's manufacturing sector, it has increased the state domestic production by 9.69% in India and remains the leading state in the country.
Key Factors for Tamil Nadu's Success:
Infrastructure and Industrial Clusters
These achievements did not happen overnight. The state government has continuously invested in ports (like Chennai, Thoothukudi), road networks, and industrial lands. SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu), established by the DMK [Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam] government in 1971, created industrial parks and elevated Tamil Nadu's infrastructure even before the manufacturing sector became nationally famous. Due to this, land and basic facilities were ready for investors even before they arrived. Cities like Coimbatore (engineering goods), Chennai (automobiles), and Tirupur (textiles) emerged as specialized sector centers.
Government Support for Investors
The Tamil Nadu government's Guidance Tamil Nadu is a full-service investment center. While "single window clearance" and "investor conferences" in many states remain mere publicity, Tamil Nadu implements this in practice.
'Guidance Tamil Nadu' helps companies with land, permits, labor issues, and daily operational problems. This quick and efficient approach gives confidence to investors.
Efficient Government Administration and Government Officials:
For Tamil Nadu's development, the Tamil Nadu government and government employees provide quick solutions rather than being obstacles. When the central government announced an incentive scheme for electronic device components, Tamil Nadu announced its scheme within a week and set a target to increase electronic device exports from the current $14 billion to $100 billion.
Political and Administrative Leadership
Political and administrative leadership provides compromise solutions to labor issues. For example, when a strike occurred at the Samsung factory, the government intervened and found a quick solution, showing the government's proactive approach.
Tamil Nadu has planned to achieve a one trillion dollar economy by 2030. Tamil Nadu itself stands as a state that guides other states of India in the manufacturing sector in India.
Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL):
With the aim of bringing about a revolution in managing solid waste generated daily in urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu, an integrated organization called Clean Movement has been established under the Special Project Implementation Department. To implement this movement, an organization called Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited (CTCL) has been brought into operation.
Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited, operating under the Clean Movement, is making efforts to build inclusive sustainable waste management throughout Tamil Nadu. As part of this, Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited has undertaken an initiative to create a strong integrated framework to handle solid waste generated throughout the state scientifically and using technology in the proper manner and to recycle them. Following this, all companies that collect waste materials and companies that recycle them will be selected and their lists will be approved by Clean Tamil Nadu Company Limited.

Economy (Unit V)
India is set to become the world's fourth-largest economy by the end of 2025, surpassing Japan, according to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) World Economic Outlook report. India's nominal GDP is projected to reach approximately $4.187 trillion for the fiscal year 2025-26, slightly exceeding Japan's estimated $4.186 trillion for 2025. This marks a significant rise from 2014 when India was the tenth largest economy with a GDP of about $2 trillion, effectively doubling its economic size in just over a decade. The growth is driven by several structural factors including rapid urbanization, a young demographic with a median age around 29 years, and strong domestic demand where private consumption accounts for nearly 70% of GDP. India’s demographic dividend, characterized by a large working-age population, supports this growth potential, although challenges remain such as skill development and regional disparities. Despite the impressive nominal GDP growth, India's per capita GDP remains much lower than Japan's, reflecting its status as a developing economy. Nonetheless, India continues to maintain a robust growth rate, expected at 6.2% in 2025 and 6.3% in 2026, positioning it as the fastest-growing major economy globally and underscoring its rising significance on the world economic stage.

International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) Launched :
China has launched the International Organisation for Mediation (IOMed) on May 30, 2025, with its headquarters in Hong Kong, marking the establishment of the world’s first intergovernmental organization dedicated specifically to mediation as a method for peaceful dispute resolution.
A total of 33 countries, including China, signed the Convention on the Establishment of IOMed.
This move fills a notable gap in the international dispute settlement framework, as while Article 33 of the UN Charter encourages peaceful settlement of disputes through various means such as negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, and judicial settlement, there has previously been no dedicated intergovernmental body focused solely on mediation.
Existing institutions like the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the Permanent Court of Arbitration mainly handle arbitration and judicial settlement, but IOMed will provide a formal platform for countries to resolve disputes through mediation, further strengthening the global architecture for peaceful international relations.
