Guide: Hello, what a surprise call! What’s up?
Student: I wanted to ask you something, that’s why I called.
Guide: Go ahead, tell me.
Student: You’ve passed the TNPSC exam and are now in a government job. My brother and I are preparing to write the TNPSC exam for the first time. Could you tell us what we need to do at the exam center, how to write the exam, and what rules we need to follow?
Guide: Don’t worry, I’ll be home in a bit. Come over, and we can talk there.
Student: Okay, my brother and I will come.
Guide: First, you need to carefully read the instructions on your hall ticket. Follow them strictly.
Student: Can you explain in more detail? That’ll make it clearer.
Guide: The exam starts at 9:30 AM. You must reach the exam center by 8:30 AM, at least an hour early, with your hall ticket, a black ink ballpoint pen, and one of the ID proofs mentioned in the hall ticket. Since you get the hall ticket in advance, it’s good to check the exam center’s location beforehand. This way, you can reach the center by 8:00 AM without any doubts. If you’re late and give excuses like missing an auto, bus, or traffic, they won’t let you in. The gates close 30 minutes before the exam, at 9:00 AM. If you’re late, saying, “Sir, I need to write the exam,” they’ll say, “Sorry, we can’t do anything; it’s the exam board’s orders.”
Student: Okay, we’ll be there by 8:30 AM.
Guide: Once inside, check the display board for your register number and go to the assigned room.
Student: Hey, can we bring mobile phones, handbags, digital watches, earphones, or Bluetooth devices to the exam center?
Guide: Absolutely not, bro. You can’t bring handbags, digital watches, mobile phones, calculators, laptops, or any electronic devices. They’re not allowed inside the exam center. If you leave them outside, it’s at your own risk, and neither the exam board nor the center will be responsible if they go missing. If they find a mobile phone or any banned item with you in the exam hall, your answer sheet will be invalidated, and you’ll be barred from writing exams for a specific period.
Student: Can we write with a blue ink ballpoint pen?
Guide: No, I just told you. You must use only a black ink ballpoint pen to fill the circles and sign. If you use a pencil, other colored pens, ink pens, or gel pens, your answer sheet will be invalidated.
Student: Okay, so we’ll just bring the hall ticket to the exam.
Guide: Once you’re inside, the room supervisor will check your hall ticket and seat you. Check the bench for your photo, name, and register number to ensure it’s yours. If you sit in the wrong seat, your answer sheet will be invalidated, and you’ll be barred from exams for a period. At 9:00 AM, the supervisor will give you the OMR answer sheet. Verify that your photo, name, register number, subject, and exam center details are correct. If there’s any error or if the barcode is damaged, inform the supervisor immediately.
Student: Is there a chance the OMR sheet could have errors?
Guide: It’s rare, but if there’s a mistake, the supervisor will inform the chief supervisor and arrange for a new, personalized OMR sheet. If everything is correct, the OMR sheet has two pages. Read the instructions on page two. Fifteen minutes before the exam, you’ll get the question booklet. Check if any pages are missing, if all 200 questions are printed in order, if the booklet is undamaged, and if there are no blank or misplaced pages. If there’s no issue, carefully write the four-digit booklet number on the OMR sheet in the designated space on page one, part two.
Student: What if there’s a mistake in the question booklet?
Guide: Before writing the booklet number on the OMR sheet, inform the supervisor. They’ll give you a new question booklet. Then, write your register number in the designated space on the question booklet.
Student: Are there likely to be printing mistakes in the question paper?
Guide: It’s highly unlikely, but you should still check. They open the question booklet packet in front of you. After writing the booklet number, darken the corresponding circles with a black ink ballpoint pen. Then, on page one, part two of the OMR sheet, confirm that you’ve read the instructions on page two and verified all details, including the darkened booklet number. You must sign this section before starting the exam.
Student: What happens if we don’t sign?
Guide: Your answer sheet will be invalidated.
Student: Okay, we’ll sign correctly. What other rules are there?
Guide: If the booklet number is written correctly but the circles are not filled, filled incorrectly, filled improperly, or multiple circles are filled or left blank, the answer sheet will be invalidated. The circle you darken is final. The supervisor will give you an attendance register where you need to write the question booklet number and sign next to your name.
Student: Can we make notes on the OMR sheet?
Guide: Absolutely not. You can’t write notes, scribble, or damage the barcode on the OMR sheet. If you do, your answer sheet will be invalidated.
Student: Okay, we’ll be careful.
Guide: Read the questions and answers carefully, then mark the answers on the OMR sheet for each question. Each question has five options: A, B, C, D, E. Darken the correct answer’s circle with a black ink ballpoint pen. If you don’t know the answer, you must darken the “E” circle. Do this for all 200 questions. Only one answer per question is valid. If you darken multiple circles, even if one is correct, the answer will be considered wrong, and no marks will be awarded. For example, if you darken B, then decide it’s wrong and darken D with a tick mark to indicate it’s correct, it’ll still be considered wrong. If you use tick marks, dots, partial shading, or draw circles inside the circle instead of darkening, your answer sheet will be invalidated. Darken the circles properly. If you leave any question’s circle blank, 0.5 marks will be deducted from your total.
Student: After answering all questions, can we leave the OMR sheet in the exam hall and go?
Guide: No, you can’t leave until the exam is over. There’s more to do with the OMR sheet. After answering all questions correctly, check page one, serial number four, which asks if you’ve darkened the circles for all 200 questions. If you’ve answered all, darken the “Yes” circle. If any circles are left blank, darken the “No” circle.
Student: But we’re darkening “E” for questions we don’t know, so how can anything be left blank?
Guide: If you’ve darkened “E,” all questions are answered. If you’ve left any blank, note how many questions you didn’t answer in the designated box. For example, if you skipped two questions, write “2.” Then, on page one, serial number five, record your left thumbprint in the designated space. Ensure the ink doesn’t smudge any part of the OMR sheet. If it does, 0.5 marks will be deducted. So, don’t forget to record your thumbprint. You’re responsible for all details on the OMR sheet, so fill them out carefully. After the exam, submit the OMR sheet to the supervisor. When submitting, sign the attendance register again to confirm you’ve handed it over. Before submitting, double-check that you’ve signed and recorded your thumbprint. Once everything is correct, submit the sheet.
Student: Okay, we’ll check and submit. Did we miss anything?
Guide: Yes, one important thing. Don’t scribble or mark unnecessarily on the OMR sheet, and don’t touch the barcode. If you do, your answer sheet will be invalidated. Again, use only a black ink ballpoint pen, no other pens.
Student: Alright, can we leave right after submitting the answer sheet?
Guide: No, bro, you must stay in the hall until the exam ends. Leave only when the supervisor allows. When you submit the answer sheet, sign the attendance register again, and don’t forget that. Then, take your hall ticket and leave carefully.
Student: One doubt: Is there negative marking in the exam?
Guide: Generally, TNPSC exams don’t have negative marking. So, if you don’t know an answer, darken the “E” circle. But try to answer all questions as much as possible. If you skip a question, 0.5 marks will be deducted, so be careful.
Student: Okay, got it. Any other tips?
Guide: Yes, don’t panic in the exam hall. Read the instructions on the question paper first. Manage your time well. Answer the questions you know first, then spend time on doubtful ones. Double-check everything, especially the circles you’ve darkened on the OMR sheet.
Student: Awesome, you explained it so clearly, Sukanya. Thanks a lot!
Guide: Haha, no problem! You and your brother write the exam carefully. Do everything right, and you’ll land a government job. All the best, bro!
Student: Thanks, we’ll definitely try!
